Bcorp are businesses that balance purpose and profit. Legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment, they are driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good.
Why BCorp ?
In 2016 Chateau Maris joined an elite membership of companies around the globe working to be the best for the world, joining the likes of Patagonia, Valhrona Chocolat, Nature et Decouvertes. BCorp requires companies to meet standards in the following areas: governance, environment, community, customers, workers. Transparency is essential. BCorp publishes results and scores of all its members, holding them accountable for their actions and motivating them to continue their efforts by improving with each re-certification (every three years). Chateau Maris was certified BCorp in 2016. Today there are only 6 certified wineries in Europe, out of only 30 in the world.
What does BCorp mean to Chateau Maris?
The BCorp certification validated many actions which Chateau Maris already had in place and has inspired us to go beyond and do more, not just to fight climate change and increase biodiversity, but also to create a better local community. We have commissioned a biodiversity study of our lands to find areas of improvement and to put in place protection measures for species which are in decline. We have also implemented a shrub and tree
planting plan where we will add additional plants in between the vineyards to encourage and help new species in our area. We have partnered with La Maison de l’Abeille (a local association) which educates the public on the importance of bees, biodiversity and protecting our lands. We also donate to a local bilingual school, Calendretta Los Cascamels, which teaches the regional language Occitan to support local culture and history.
We have also implemented additional projects and motivational activities for our employees encouraging them to volunteer for local non-profits and allowing them paid time off 1 day a year to participate.
What does it mean for the consumer?
When you drink a bottle of Maris, you are supporting sustainable agriculture, fair wages, community engagement and helping to reduce climate change. We can all drink to that!
“As I wrote last year, there’s no reason to hold onto any antiquated notions of Languedoc wine quality. Or, indeed, of pricing. The best wines are increasingly priced according to the market and perceived value by the producers. For the most part, serious wine lovers can focus on the region’s five crus: Corbières-Boutenac, La Clape, Minervois La Livinière, Pic Saint Loup and Terrasses du Larzac.” Wine Advocate
LES AMANDIERS 2017 – 92/95 POINTS
The Syrah-dominated 2017 Minervois la Livinière les Amandiers remains substantially marked by its stay in new oak, showing off some dusty cedar notes and lashings of vanilla. There’s ample blueberry fruit, hints of black olives and a plush mouthfeel leading into a long, velvety finish. For modernists looking for a rich, full-bodied red, this has it all.
LES ANCIENS 2017 – 91/93 POINTS
The old-vine Carignan 2017 Minervois la Livinière les Anciens seems ripe and more supple than the 2016 was at this time last year. It’s still a vibrant, youthful wine, but it shows more purple raspberry fruit and less peppery green. Medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and crisp acids, it finishes long and tongue-tingling.
LES PLANELS 2017 – 89/91 POINTS
Full-bodied and densely concentrated, the 2017 Minervois La Livinière Les Planels can come across as being too much of a good thing. Vanilla accents notions of fruitcake and plum pudding, as this Syrah-Grenache blend combines fruity and savory elements into a complex, dark-fruited wine that deserves a couple of years in the cellar to sort itself out.
LAS COMBES 2017 – 90 POINTS
The Grenache-dominated 2017 Minervois Las Combes is bright, fresh and fruity, with almost candied cherry, pomegranate and even tangerine notes accented by Christmas spices and garrigue. This medium-bodied beauty should be a delight to drink over the next few years.
LA TOUGE – 88/90 POINTS
The 2017 Minervois la Livinière La Touge is an approachable, medium-bodied blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache. It’s more red-fruited and friendly than the other Maris wines in 2017, showcasing silky tannins and mixed cherries and blueberries, without any obvious oak influence.
Two wines from Château Maris have been awarded at the Organic Masters 2019 by The Drinks Business : a gold medal to Savoir Vieillir 2018 and Master to Dynamic 2016.
SAVOIR VIEILLIR 2018 – GOLD MEDAL
“Between £15 and £20 we found our best-value pick of the day, Savoir Veillir, a pure Syrah from Minervois, made by biodynamic Château Maris. Soft, intense, with masses of black fruit, spice and touch of tapenade, this was a great wine at an affordable price, that we later found out, much to our surprise due to its clean and expressive fresh fruit character, is also made with no added sulphites.”
DYNAMIC 2016 – MASTER
“Europe also shone at this top end of the tastings. Notably once again, Château Maris, which produced our star of the day with its ultimate expression: Dynamic. Gaining an average score of 96 points from our exacting judges, it appealed to everyone for its clearly identifiable fine, concentrated dark berry and pepper Syrah character, and smooth fleshy black cherry flavours on the palate, along with a touch of smoky complexity, grippy texture, and some sweet oak in the background. A big, powerful drop in its youth, that also displayed an appealing brightness too. As Stefanowicz summed up about the wine, “Balanced, concentrated, complex, layered and lingering on the finish.”

LES AMANDIERS 2017 – 94/96 POINTS
“Always one of my favorite releases from this terrific estate, the Syrah-dominated 2017 Les Amandiers (there’s some Grenache in the blend as well) offers a full-bodied, lively, yet deep and rich profile that carries stunning notes of cassis, black raspberries, olives, ground pepper, and Asian spices. It has good acidity, beautiful purity, terrific balance, and is a stunning Minervois that will keep for over a decade.”
LES PLANELS 2017 – 90/92 POINTS
“Mostly Grenache, the 2017 Les Planels is a sweetly fruited, plush, hedonist beauty that gives up loads of ripe red and black fruits, toasted spices, chocolate, and incense aromas and flavors. With sweet tannins, medium to full body, no hard edges, and outstanding length, it’s ideal for drinking over the coming 6-8 years.”
LA TOUGE 2017 – 89/91 POINTS
“Leading off these new releases from Domaine Maris, the 2017 Syrah La Touge (there’s some Grenache in the blend as well) offers plenty of black and blue fruits as well as classic pepper, violets, and earthy aromas and flavors. It’s medium to full-bodied, juicy, balanced, and already delicious.”

Back to the Maris news pageAlthough founded earlier, the modern history of Ch. Maris began in 1997 when the current ownership group bought the winery and installed Robert Eden (one of the ownership group) as winemaker. Under Eden’s guidance, Château Maris moved away from commercial chemical farming toward first organic and then Biodynamic vineyard practices. As they did, life returned to the soil, the vine got heathier, and the quality of the grapes improved. Ch, Maris gained EcoCert status in 2002, Biodyvin since 2004 and Demeter in 2008. Ch. Maris was certified a “BCorps” in 2016. All these certifications remain in effect. Minervois has never tasted so good. La Liviniere has never tasted so good.
British-born Robert Eden is the winemaker and co-owner of Ch. Maris. He has lived in France since 1994 after traveling in Australia, Italy, Burgundy, Spain and California where he worked with renowned winemakers. Since 1997, he has pursued organic and biodynamic viticulture at Chateau Maris. Robert has been actively involved in the protection of the environment going so far as to build the first hemp cellar that passively consumes Co2. He regularly presents on the advantages of biodynamic viticulture and the importance of taking steps to reduce the impact on the environment in the wine industry.
All well and good but how are the wines? In a word: Stunning. I was expecting this tasting in my office to be a courtesy appointment ending sooner rather than later in a “Thanks for coming by.” Instead, it stretched out over two hours as I tasted wine after wine that both surprised and delighted me. I’ve been tasting wines from Minervois (and its Languedoc neighbors) for over 30 years and I have never tasted wines like these. I have never before thought that this area could produce a wine I would score 97 or 98 points. I was both stunned and elated.

Brama 2016- MASTER MEDAL “At the very top of the organic white wine quality pyramid in this year’s competition was an oily, barrel-fermented blockbuster from brilliant biodynamic stalwart Château Maris in Minervois. Attractive and interesting nose with orchard fruits and wood shaving, a delicious palate with some peach, lemon apple honey and beeswax. Back to the Maris news pageRosemary George Reviews two Chateau Maris wines in her Blog Taste Languedoc
“Bertie makes a variety of different wines. There is a textured Grenache Gris, Brama, Vin de France, from young wines. Les Anciens is mainly Carignan aged in 50 hl foudres for 15 months. Bertie enthused about Carignan. ‘It is a noble variety here, and it can stand up to the seasons’. This had the elegant rusticity that is the benchmark of good Carignan, with some firm red fruit. ”
Thanks to Armit Wines, I have recently enjoyed, and indeed compared and contrasted La Touge with les Combes.
2017 La Touge, Minervois la Livinière – £18.00
Deep young colour. Ripe spicy berry fruit on both nose and palate, with a balancing streak of tannin. Lots of red berry fruit. A lovely depth of flavour. Quite simply, the warm south in a glass, sunshine and garrigues, and all the more appealing on a cold winter’s evening with sausage and mash. Nicely balanced and drinking beautifully.
2017 Minervois Las Combes – £21.68
From old vine Grenache, and making a very appealing contrast with la Touge. The colour is much lighter, as you would expect from Grenache. And there is a wonderful liqueur cherry note on the nose, which repeats on the palate with a streak of tannin. Medium weight. A touch of alcohol on the finish and indeed it does reach 15°, but none the less retains its balance. A touch of cinnamon and spice, with elegance and depth.

When I think of the Languedoc region in France where I visited a few months ago, my first thoughts are of abundant sunshine, hospitable people, stunning landscapes and wines as unique and fresh as anything I’ve sipped. But there’s another element to the Languedoc that is just as pervasive: a conscientious commitment to the environment on the part of winemakers and winegrowers.
Just recently, I received four wines (as samples) from Château Marisand once I learned more about the owners’ mission, it was obvious that this estate, on many levels, was yet another example of a compelling place to explore in Languedoc. Why? For starters, Chateau Maris is the first European vineyard to obtain B Corporation certification, a label recognized by the UN and European Commission. The certification indicates that Château Maris is transforming “their business into a virtuous force for good: good for workers, good for communities and good for the environment.” At the Château, the goal is to “produce quality wines by adopting practices that respect not only nature, but also the men and women with whom we work.”.

In the ranking of the Fondation du Vin, an association under the 1901 law, which lists innovative, responsible and inspiring initiatives in the world of wine, Château Maris, in Félines Minervois in the Languedoc, which produces only wines in biodynamic culture, has just sent 1200 bottles to the United States, by sailboat. They crossed the Atlantic with Grain de Sail, a cargo sailboat. A new mode of freight transport that is more environmentally friendly and emits 17 times less CO2 than a conventional container ship. The sailboat will export 2 times a year 10,000 AB certified French wines to the United States.

South of France: New Releases from the Languedoc and Roussillon
August 11, 2021
This report looks at a handful of producers from the Languedoc and Roussillon, mostly 2018s and 2019s. As I’ve written
in the past, these regions are a treasure trove of beautiful, character-filled wines that sell for a song. I hope you’re able
to give some of these a try!
LES AMANDIERS 2018 – 95 POINTS
My favorite in the lineup from Maris, the 2018 Minervois La Livinière Les Amandiers is largely Syrah (they usually include a small amount of Grenache) and offers a straight-up awesome bouquet of ripe black raspberries, almond, spicy oak, ground pepper, and Asian spices. Rich, full-bodied, and powerful, it has a nicely oaked, concentrated, seamless style, wonderful tannins, and a great, great finish. As with the other 2018s here, it has a slightly more front end-loaded profile, yet it should still have at least 7-8 years, if not a good decade, of prime drinking. It’s another fabulous wine from this estate I wish every reader could taste.
DYNAMIC 2018 – 92 POINTS Readers looking for a rich, complex, meaty Minervois with loads of character should check out the 2018 Minervois La
Livinière Dynamic. Giving up a deep purple hue as well as loads of ripe plum, black raspberry, and currant fruit, it’s medium to full-bodied and has loads of peppery garrigue and assorted meatiness, ripe tannins, a deep, layered midpalate, and a great finish. It’s beautifully done, with a soft, supple, already delicious style geared for enjoying over the coming 3-5 years.
BRAMA 2018 – 92 POINTS All varietal from old vines planted in clay and limestone soils, the 2018 Grenache Gris Brama is a stunner that just about
jumps out of the glass with its exotic lemon and lime zest, flower oil, honeysuckle, buttered toast, and even green almond-like aromatics. These all carry over to the palate where the wine is medium to full-bodied, has a rounded, elegant, seamless texture, an undeniable sense of minerality, good acidity and a great finish. An incredibly classy, delicious, balanced white, it should keep for 2-3 years with no issues, and I suspect it have an interesting evolution even beyond that.

Lovely, serious, structured red with cedar like oak. Serious. Red. Layered, toast and cedar, tannin and freshness, warmth, with core of cherry and blackcurrant. Lovely

Installed in the Minervois since 1997, Robert Eden, grandson of a former British Prime Minister, leads his 45 hectares
biodynamic vines since 2004. He multiplies experiments to go further towards carbon neutrality. Pioneer
in the protection of nature, his cellar is built of hemp and lime bricks, and he chose the sailboat for the expedition of
its wines to New Jersey – 90% of production is exported. On board a 24-meter monohull from the Grain company
de Sail, the bottles sail for a month from Saint-Malo to Port Elizabeth. For Robert Eden, the additional cost of 15% is a
investment: “This crossing marks the beginning of a great adventure. We believe in the future of this type of transport.”

“We’re trying to implement this new wording, so people understand that it’s a cargo ship and a sailboat,” Matthieu Riou, who is the company’s export director, said the other day, stepping aboard Grain de Sail, a two-masted aluminum-hulled schooner. He wore a backward baseball cap, dirty white sneakers, and a T-shirt with an illustration of a woman drinking wine and smoking a cigarette. “The goal is to bring some new stuff to the U.S., wines that have never been distributed in New York City. New types of grapes, new types of techniques.” After twenty-four days at sea, the cargo sailboat, which is registered as an official merchant vessel by the French government, had arrived in New York Harbor, with eight thousand bottles: Château Maris grenache, Ferme de la Sansonniere Chenin Blanc, Charles Heidsieck champagne. A sailor named François Le Naoures said, “This is the first time since Prohibition that we import so much alcohol by sail.”

“When we are biodynamic, we try to capture energy, not consume it”
Robert Eden is at the head of Château Maris (45 hectares of vines in Félines-Minervois, Hérault). The Languedoc estate has the particularity of having a semi-buried hemp cellar. Finalized in 2010, its vat room and cellar have walls made of hemp and lime bricks: good insulation, “it is a material that breathes. The hemp bricks do the filling and are supported by wooden posts,” explains Robert Eden, who adds that each wall is made up of two walls with an intermediate space (emphasizing the insulation and allowing air to circulate)
With 1,000 m² of surface area without air conditioning, this vegetable cellar displays a temperature ranging from 11 to 19°C throughout the year. A thermal buffer that doubles as carbon dioxide capture since its installation

Last March, there were many chefs for this trip to the provinces, to Cognac, the first of its kind for the famous red guide and the presentation of its winners of the year. Many and eager to know what star sauce they were going to be eaten. Each in turn: it’s up to us to discover the dishes of those who are simmering that day while waiting for the results.
Restaurant Le Meurice Alain Ducasse** (Paris)
Chef Amaury Bouhours is at work in this historic Palace whose restaurant decor was orchestrated by Philippe Starck. He offers us a superb barely cooked Noirmoutier sea bream, carrot from Allonnes, marigold, smoked yoghurt. The ideal would have been a “cocktail” around Saké Nakamura from Kanagawa prefecture associated with Leche juice from
Tiger present in the dish and seasoned with Espelette pepper and ginger, a nod to Nikkei cuisine, a meeting of Peruvian and Japanese culture. The chef won’t blame us for having chosen for the occasion a seasonal rose with a promising name: “Rose de nymphe Émue” from Maris (AOC Languedoc).

Back to the Maris news pageChateau Maris received a special commendation for the Drinks Business– Best Logistics and Supply Chain Green Initiative.
The annual awards celebrate brands and individuals that do so much more than simply pay lip service to sustainability. The 2022 winners have shown extraordinary commitment and creativity in putting the green agenda at the heart of their businesses, extending it to every possible corner and crevice.
Commendation: Château Maris
Chateau Maris contined their green efforts in 2022 with 2 transatlantic wine shipments via solar powered sailboat with the Breton company Grain de Sail . Using this form of transportation reduces carbon emissions by up to 90 % and reduces noise pollution and collisions with living creatures in the air and sea.
Our second initiative in 2022 is the installation of a copper wine tank in our café, thus reducing waste of bottles, boxes and plastic film as wines by the glass and café as served from this eco-friendly container. It currently serves as a test project with the goal to expand to wider use in the restaurant and entertainment industry.

In November 2022, Château Maris in Languedoc received the Robert Parker Green Emblem, one of only 40 wineries worldwide to have achieved the distinction for “efforts far beyond the requirements of organic and biodynamic certification”.
This is no accident, but a cornerstone of the winery’s “outstanding” sustainability efforts. In 2002, Chateau Maris co-owner and winemaker Robert Eden converted the estate to biodynamics and in 2016 achieved the first B Corp winery and winery certification in Europe.
Part visionary, part maverick, and debauched prankster, this snowy-bearded British-born force of nature strives to reduce Château Maris’ carbon footprint in a number of ways.

“Reviting reds of the Languedoc”
Tasty and satisfying are among the most common descriptors used by our judges at the Decanter World Wine Awards to describe the best Languedoc red wines in the south of France.
Languedoc AOP wines can be complex, revealing a host of tantalizing aromas and flavors to delve into, particularly from the region’s top appellations and named sub-zones such as Minervois La Livinière, La Clape or Corbières-Boutenac.
“We are always looking for harmony, balance, poise and subtlety; wines that embody that particular regional style with panache and style”

Chateau Maris is one of only 40 wineries in the world who have achieved this distinction alongside others such as Chateau Cheval Blanc, Domaine Leroy & Domaine d’Auvenay, Henschke, Ridge Vineyards
The Robert Parker Green Emblem is given in recognition of the most extraordinary cases of sustainable efforts in our wine industry. The distinction is awarded to producers/wineries that have achieved outstanding levels of sustainability. It is very rarely given out, and only after careful consideration of firsthand reviewer knowledge.
The producer needs excel in areas including community efforts toward long-term environmental health, biodiversity and efforts toward improving the larger social issue impacts of wine production. They are true ambassadors, leading the charge to make our industry and our planet a better place for current and future generations. Once a winery is awarded this distinction, all of their wines will carry the Robert Parker Green Emblem symbol going forward, until changes at the winery may result in the distinction being rescinded.
