Back to the Maris news pageLa Maison de l’ Abeille Maris is donating a portion of profits of La Touge “Cuvée Abeille” « Bee Cuvée » to this local organization whose mission is to conserve and protect bees and educate the community on their importance for biodiversity.
Back to the Maris news pageThe soils were dead when the vineyard was purchased in 1997. The decision was quickly made to bring the earth back to health by using more natural, organic methods. Ecocert certification was obtained in 2002.
Back to the Maris news pageDemeter certification was obtained in 2008.
ue Demeter was created at the beginning of the 20th century in Germany by farmers. Over the decades, Demeter has professionalized to offer today:
a range of demanding and comprehensive international specifications for biodynamic agriculture and the development of processed products derived from it (food products, cosmetics and textiles)
a reliable control and certification system at the international level (nearly 60 countries). Our Estate wines are certified Demeter.
For us, it is important to respect the entire life cycle and not simply one part of it. Robert Eden
Bcorp are businesses that balance purpose and profit. Legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment, they are driving a global movement of people using business as a force for good.
Why BCorp ?
In 2016 Chateau Maris joined an elite membership of companies around the globe working to be the best for the world, joining the likes of Patagonia, Valhrona Chocolat, Nature et Decouvertes. BCorp requires companies to meet standards in the following areas: governance, environment, community, customers, workers. Transparency is essential. BCorp publishes results and scores of all its members, holding them accountable for their actions and motivating them to continue their efforts by improving with each re-certification (every three years). Chateau Maris was certified BCorp in 2016. Today there are only 6 certified wineries in Europe, out of only 30 in the world.
What does BCorp mean to Chateau Maris?
The BCorp certification validated many actions which Chateau Maris already had in place and has inspired us to go beyond and do more, not just to fight climate change and increase biodiversity, but also to create a better local community. We have commissioned a biodiversity study of our lands to find areas of improvement and to put in place protection measures for species which are in decline. We have also implemented a shrub and tree
planting plan where we will add additional plants in between the vineyards to encourage and help new species in our area. We have partnered with La Maison de l’Abeille (a local association) which educates the public on the importance of bees, biodiversity and protecting our lands. We also donate to a local bilingual school, Calendretta Los Cascamels, which teaches the regional language Occitan to support local culture and history.
We have also implemented additional projects and motivational activities for our employees encouraging them to volunteer for local non-profits and allowing them paid time off 1 day a year to participate.
What does it mean for the consumer?
When you drink a bottle of Maris, you are supporting sustainable agriculture, fair wages, community engagement and helping to reduce climate change. We can all drink to that!
